Varlyn Fink served as a county 4-H/Youth leader for 33 years from 1960 to 1993 with service to Jones and Cedar counties. During that time, he strived to maintain a strong county-wide volunteer network. He emphasized the importance of youth taking advantage of new 4-H experiences such as county 4-H camps, state conference, Washington Focus, out-of-state and urban exchanges.
Varlyn initiated the Jones County 4-H scholarship fund and assisted with establishing the 4-H 400 Program while serving as a trustee on the Iowa 4-H Foundation. During his career with ISU Extension, Varlyn served as the state chairman and North Central Regional Director of the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents.
