2004 Hamilton County - Bertha J. ShawBertha Shaw has been involved with the Iowa 4-H program for many years.  Bertha began as a 4-H member in Cero Gordo County; she came into Extension 1978 as a home economist for Cherokee and Plymouth Counties.  In 1984 Bertha became the home economist for Wright and Hamilton Counties, she served as Hamilton County’s Extension Director from 1992-2003, and now continues her involvement as a retiree.

Over the years, Berth has been very involved and supportive of 4-H programs, especially in Hamilton County.  She has been long time annual member of the Hamilton County 4-H Foundation that was formed in 1949.  During her years with Extension, she was very instrumental in seeing that the wishes of the Foundation founding fathers were carried out.  She continues to give of her time and resources by constructing the “Fair Quilt” for the 4-H Foundation’s annual “Quilt Raffle”. She was awarded the 4-H Alumni Award by the Hamilton County 4-H Foundation in 1999..

Bertha continues to judge 4-H record books to determine yearly top county awards.  She volunteers to host the special booths that 4-H has at the county fair over past several years including the annual 4-H quilt raffle ticket sales.

Bertha willingly shares the history of 4-H in Hamilton County when requested at special 4-H events.  She keeps in contact with a number of former county 4-H members.  Bertha Shaw has set an excellent example for the youth to become contributing community members now as well as in the future.
