Emil and Vernette Bielfeldt were very instrumental in getting the first 4-H club started in Charter Oak over 60 years ago and helped start the Charter Oak Achievement Days that is still active to this date. They were leaders of the Charter Oak Boosters for many years. Their children were always encouraged to participate and do the best job they could. If they started a project, their parents were there by their side to see it through until completion. They didn’t do the project for them; they just gave good advice on how to complete it. Emil and Vernette’s children say their 4-H years at home were the greatest years of their lives.
Emil and Vernette have since retired and moved to town, but each year you will see them at the fairs to see how the youth of the county have done their projects that they are exhibiting at the fair. Emil and Vernette were also instrumental in keeping the herdsmanship program going at the Crawford County fair. They have three grown daughters that were all very active in 4-H, 11 grandchildren that have been very active also, and now 7 great-grandchildren that have also started the new generation of 4-H’ers in the family.
