Harold Janssen of Palmer had no idea he was beginning a family tradition when he joined 4-H in Pocahontas County in 1942. His love of 4-H is shared by his two sons, and 5 grandchildren who have belonged to the county 4-H program. His great grandson even attended the fair in 2002 when he was only 3 weeks old. Harold became a Pocahontas County 4-H leader in 1951 of the Bellville Boosters club. Harold was a 4-H leader for 30 years, retiring in 1981. After attending the Pocahontas County fair for 61 years, he still feels that the fair is the highlight of his summer!
Harold Janssen has served on many fair committees and won many awards over the years. But the best award is not a trophy of ribbon. He says, “Seeing all the kids and their involvement with 4-H, that has to be the biggest award of all.”
