Berl started 4-H in Kossuth County showing Guernsey cattle when he was 10 years old. The Kossuth County Fair would not be what it is today without Berl. He served as chairman of the fair board for 30 years. He also volunteered to work with kids on showing and judging cattle. Most of the top cattle showman in the county learned something from Berl.
Berl and his wife Madelyn have three children that were all in 4-H. They were involved in many project areas, but all showed cattle at various shows around the United States. Many of their grandchildren were also in 4-H.
Berl also served as President of the Angus Association and was instrumental in starting the Kossuth County Cattlemen organization in the late 1940’s. He is well known in the cattle industry and also the political arena. Berl served in the Iowa House for four years and went on to serve as a State Senator for 24 years. He is also a state and county 4-H Alumni award recipient.
