For over 45 years, Calvin Wheelock, 91 years old of Grundy County, has served on the Grundy County Fair Board. He said he continues to serve because “I’ve always had an interest in the fair because it meant so much to me when I participated as a boy.”
Calvin was among the founding members of the “Felix Clay 4-H Club” participating as a student from 1924 to 1931. While in 4-H, Calvin participated in Livestock, Carcass and Grain Judging contests, along with demonstration teams. In 1928, he won a trip to Chicago International with his demonstration team. He ran for State Office but was defeated by one vote.
Calvin went on to be a leader for the same club for 30 years. One of the demonstration teams that Calvin coached won a trip to Chicago International. That team included Lee Kline and Robert Myers. Calvin also served on the Grundy County Youth Committee for about 10 years acting as chairman for several years. In 1955, Calvin was honored with the State 4-H Alumni Achievement Award.
Calvin is still managing his farm in Grundy county. His family includes Florence, his wife of 66 years; two sons, Gerald Wheelock, Huntsville, AL, Russel Wheelock, Independence, MO and a daughter, Bonnie Harmon, Omaha, NE. He has five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
