George Hoffman, Jr.’s contribution to 4-H started in 1932 when he joined at the age of 9. He has attended every Ida County Fair since then, a record of 71 consecutive years. He has participated in 4-H as a member, a junior leader, a leader (for 26 years) and a 4-H Committee member. He is currently serving as a beef superintendent, a duty he has performed for over 40 years.
George and his wife Ruth have hosted exchange students from 4 states and chaperoned 2 groups of Ida County 4-Hers on visits to other states. They have also sponsored several fair trophies. George has cheerfully volunteered both time and equipment for service to 4-H. His livestock and facilities have been used for many judging workouts.
George’s 4-H career has extended beyond Ida County to other fairs as well. He has shown at the Iowa State Fair, the Ak-Sar-Ben, and the American Royal in Kasas City. As a leader, he was always willing to help other 4-Hers attend these shows by hauling livestock, chaperoning judging teams and giving an encouraging word. But George’s most important contribution has been the passing on of his strong sense of 4-H values to hundreds of young Ida County 4-Hers.
