2002 Grundy County - Celestine Miller PersingerCelestine Miller Persinger joined the Palermo Township Grundy County 4-H Club in 1925 where she was a member for nine years.  During those years, she exhibited projects at the Grundy County Fair and the Iowa State Fair.  Celestine was awarded a trip to the Chicago Livestock International in the beef competition, won a blue ribbon in the team demonstration at the State Fair, and was named State Winner in the Home Furnishing Department.

Celestine served as a 4-H club leader for 20 years.  She served on the County 4-H Committee and received the Grundy County Alumni Award in 1956 and Honorary Award in 1967.

Celestine and her husband have opened their home to several IFYE students over the years.  Their children also participated in 4-H and showed cattle at the county fair the state fair.  Cattle showing was an important part of the family’s 4-H involvement.

4-H has been a major component of Celestine’s life.  The adult leaders she had during her early years became friends and gave guidance and support in choosing goals as she grew older.  Through 4-H, Celestine acquired self-confidence, a sense of integrity, and leadership abilities.  The many projects that were available and the “doing while learning” were exciting for her.

Celestine and her husband, Francis, have continued their interest in 4-H Youth through the Persinger-Asmus 4-H Scholarship.
