Merlin Newman served on the Clarke County Fair Board for 17 years, replacing his father on the board. He served as president of the board for 8 years. He was always very enthusiastic about the fair and helping young people. Merlin was a 4-H’er himself and has received National 4-H Alumnus recognition.
Merlin was a diversified farmer and raised purebred beef cattle, before his health caused him to retire.
Merlin has been a member of Farm Bureau for 56 years, serving Clarke County president from 1968-1972. He was an active member of Clarke County sheriff’s Posse for many years, and Chairman of the County Republicans for several years. He also has received the Honorary Farmer Award. He received the Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1985 and the local Community Service Award in 1989.
