Jerry and Carol Tlach have been dedicated supporters of 4-H for over three decades, embodying the values of leadership, service, and lifelong learning.

Jerry’s involvement began in his youth as a proud member of his local club, where he exhibited cattle at the Hancock County Fair. He later helped his younger sisters with their livestock projects and served as a leader of the Britt Broncos 4-H Club for about 10 years. His leadership encouraged members to try new project areas and build confidence. Jerry also served four years on the Hancock County Extension Council and continued his advocacy for 4-H as a Hancock County Supervisor.

Carol, though not a 4-H’er growing up, fully embraced the program after marrying Jerry. She became actively involved as a 4-H parent and leader while their children participated at both the county and state levels. For over five years, she co-led the Britt Broncos, encouraging youth to explore communication projects like educational presentations and working exhibits. Carol also served three years on the Hancock County Fair Board and continues to volunteer as a hostess in the SMA Building during the fair.

Together, they raised four children who were deeply involved in 4-H, excelling in leadership and projects such as baking, sewing, woodworking, and livestock. Their favorite vacation became camping as a family at the Iowa State Fair.

Today, they continue their 4-H legacy by supporting their grandchildren—Carol mentors in sewing and baking, while Jerry helps with livestock projects.

Jerry and Carol Tlach are true champions of 4-H, whose dedication continues to shape the lives of youth in Hancock County and beyond.

Carrie Smith is remembered as a devoted 4-H member, leader, and volunteer whose life perfectly reflects the spirit of the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. From a shy 10-year-old with hearing challenges to a beloved mentor and club leader, Carrie’s journey was one of perseverance, kindness, and unwavering commitment to youth development.

Carrie’s 4-H story began with the Clay Busy Bees in Grundy County. Though communication was difficult, her creativity and competitive spirit helped her overcome her fear of speaking to judges and groups. She quickly became a leader, serving as a club officer, County Council member, and regular exhibitor at county and state fairs. Her favorite 4-H experiences included camps, trips, and the annual Halloween party—especially connecting with peers, even while waiting in line. Known for her quick humor and incredible ability to “listen” from across the room by lip-reading, Carrie had a unique gift for making others feel seen.

As an adult, Carrie returned to lead the same club that had once helped shape her. She poured herself into the role, mentoring youth, supporting families, and volunteering at countless events, including omelet breakfasts, County Council functions, and her favorite—the Grundy County Fair. Each summer, she used vacation time from work to be present all week, helping first-year members, attending shows, and cheering from the sidelines, always with homemade bars in tow.

Carrie passed away at 48, but her legacy lives on through two Grundy County 4-H awards named in her honor—one for youth and one for adults who reflect her values of service, encouragement, and dedication.

Guthrie County

Randy and Lynnette Hughes

Randy and Lynnette Hughes have been lifelong champions of 4-H, farming, and community service. Their story together began at the Iowa State Fair in 1982 and took root in Guthrie County, where their shared love for agriculture blossomed into a life of leadership and service.

After marrying and settling near Bayard, Randy and Lynnette raised their children, Courtney and Cody, on the farm. Both kids were active in 4-H, showing cattle and pigs. Lynnette served as an EMT with the Bayard ambulance, offering care and comfort to the community, while Randy was a firefighter, providing emergency support and embodying service.

Their commitment to 4-H deepened over the years. Lynnette became a 4-H club leader for the Dodge Dodgers and served on the Extension/4-H Youth Committee, mentoring countless youth. Randy led as President of the Guthrie County Cattlemen for eight years, organizing community events, fundraisers, and cookouts. Both became known for their generosity, leadership, and willingness to help others succeed.

Through Hughes Cattle Company, they welcomed many 4-H’ers and families into their lives. Young people like Gabby, Tucker, Taryn, Bob, and Kole became extended family, receiving guidance, love, and support as if they were their children.

Randy passed away on November 15, 2023. The outpouring of love and support following his passing reflected the deep and lasting impact he and Lynnette have had on the community. Lynnette and their children continue to honor his legacy, carrying forward the values of hard work, mentorship, and the 4-H spirit they’ve always embodied.

Born and raised in Lee County, Steve and his wife Dawn reside on a farm near Donnellson. His 4-H journey began as a youth member, with a strong interest in participating in the Lee County Fair—a passion that continued into adulthood.

Earl and Lesa Vold have been dedicated and influential volunteers in the Hamilton County 4-H program since 2004, especially within the horse project area. Their journey began by helping with the county’s weekly riding clinics, providing essential practice opportunities for 4-H youth preparing for the county fair. They quickly became essential figures in the horse program, offering consistent support and guidance at both clinics and the county fair horse show.

When the previous horse program leader stepped down, Earl and Lesa stepped in to lead the fair show, bringing steady leadership and a strong sense of community. While they eventually passed the weekly clinic responsibilities to a new generation of horse program graduates, they continued to volunteer and support youth in meaningful ways.

One of the most rewarding aspects of their service was working alongside their daughter, Cassaundra, who went from participant to adult volunteer. Lesa also helped coach a team for the state 4-H Horse Judging Contest and supported youth participation in the Iowa Horse Youth Jamboree, encouraging deeper learning and growth beyond the show ring.

Earl and Lesa have built lasting relationships with 4-H’ers, parents, volunteers, and the fair board. They’ve watched many young riders grow into confident adults, some even pursuing equine careers. Favorite memories include the creative horse costume contest and the crowd-favorite parent/alumni egg and spoon race.

Their years of dedication, leadership, and enthusiasm have left an indelible mark on Hamilton County’s 4-H horse program, making it a welcoming and supportive space for all involved.

They served as leaders of the Goshen Gladiators 4-H Club for 11 years, where they helped guide and mentor countless youth throughout their 4-H journeys.

Raised on a crop and beef farm near Boone, Beth’s early 4-H experiences—showing cattle at county, state, and international levels—laid the foundation for a career rooted in advocacy for the livestock industry.

Beth served over 30 years with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, including 27 years as a beef specialist in northwest Iowa, supporting 17 counties. Her work empowered countless producers through research-based education, problem-solving, and resource sharing. Prior to that, she spent 4.5 years as an Extension 4-H and youth leader and another 4.5 years with Michigan State University Extension, further demonstrating her commitment to youth development.

Her leadership extended to coordinating major events like the Feedlot Forum and leading grant projects focused on Beef Quality Assurance and agricultural mental health. Beth also educated youth through Bottle/Bucket Calf Workshops, beef carcass data analysis at county fairs, and presentations at Beef Bonanza, a regional 4-H workshop.

Beth’s ability to connect with producers, youth, and professionals alike made her a trusted voice in Iowa agriculture. She exemplified the spirit of Extension and 4-H—resilient, compassionate, and committed to lifelong learning.

Her legacy is one of mentorship, service, and unwavering dedication to helping Iowans thrive.
