Developed in partnership with the Iowa State University Extension & Outreach Rising Star Internship Program, these 4-H interns will deliver established 4-H programming in STEM and/or Agriculture. Up to eight interns (four counties) will be hired to help support the capacity of local 4-H staff to deliver 4-H programming.
Goals for these interns include:
- Increase capacity of county 4-H staff for program delivery
- Implement existing programming to reach more youth with a focus on Agriculture and STEM
- Support retention from summer programming into fall membership
- Provide professional opportunities for college students as an on-ramp to future 4-H/Extension employment
Interns should apply here by December 1.
The Iowa 4-H Foundation will be subsidizing the cost of the interns. The cost to counties will be $3,250 per intern, which is half of traditional Rising Star Interns. Additional county responsibilities include:
- Provide office space and supplies for interns at county office
- Regional Directors will support housing identification
- Identify and secure dates and locations for summer programming and connect to community partners in advance
- Handle all summer programming registration
- Support interns with promotional information to convert summer 4-H contacts into long-term programming in the fall
Counties can expect the following support from the State 4-H Office:
- Interview, hire and place interns
- Provide programmatic supervision of interns through field youth program specialists
- Provide curriculum and plans of work for summer program implementation developed by Priority Area Teams
- Implement additional 4-H specific trainings
Counties will submit an interest application, open November 13, indicating their programming preferences and ability to participate. The deadline for completing the interest survey will be November 21. Counties will be notified of their selection by December 1.
