Iowa 4-H Foundation Announces Scholarships For 2016

AMES, Iowa- The Iowa 4-H Foundation has announced applications are now available for its 4-H scholarship program. Approximately 82 scholarship opportunities valued at over $75,350 will be awarded. 

Iowa 4-H Foundation Announces Hills Bank & Trust Scholarships For 2016

AMES, Iowa—The Iowa 4-H Foundation and Hills Bank & Trust partnership announces its 201 Leadership Grants for high school juniors for the fall of 2016.  For the past 15 years, Hills Bank & Trust Company has partnered with the Iowa 4-H Foundation to provide college scholarship opportunities for Iowa 4-H youth who reside in the bank's service area.  In 2002, Hills Bank established a permanent scholarship endowment, which now provides 20 - $1,000 grants for high school seniors to attend any accredited Iowa college, university, or community college.  Applicants apply during their junior year in high school and must attend at least nine hours of leadership training sponsored by Hills Bank & Trust in order to qualify for the award.

AMES, Iowa  A record breaking 125 Iowa 4-H volunteers from ninety-one counties were inducted into the 2015 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame on Sunday, August 23 at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair. Inductees or their representatives were presented a certificate by the Iowa 4-H Foundation as they were introduced on stage. A reception, sponsored by donors to the Iowa 4-H Foundation, was held shortly after the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame presentations.

Hamilton County's Wil Groves Awarded 2015 Top 4-H Leader of the Year!

AMES, Iowa – The Successful Farming/Loren Kruse Outstanding Iowa 4-H Leader award is presented each year to an adult volunteer who has encouraged, challenged, and inspired Iowa 4-H members to achieve at their fullest potential. This year’s recipient is Wilfred "Wil" Groves, III, of Jewell, Iowa. Groves is a past 4-H leader of the Freedom Warriors 4-H Club and has served 4-H as a volunteer leader in Hamilton County for over 35 years.

Iowa 4-H Foundation Dedicates Tornado Safe Room at Iowa 4-H Center

Ames, IA-- In 2008, a deadly tornado struck a Boy Scout camp in western Iowa. In response to that tragedy, the Iowa 4-H Foundation committed to constructing a tornado safe room at the Iowa 4-H Center in Madrid to protect campers in the event of severe weather. The facility was officially dedicated on July 1 following the completion of construction this past fall. 4-H supporters came together to celebrate this space and experience camp at the Iowa 4-H Center.

Iowa 4-H Foundation Awards over $70,000 in 2015 Iowa 4-H College Scholarships

Ames, Iowa –The Iowa 4-H Foundation has announced the recipients of 72 Iowa 4-H college scholarships valued at over $70,000. Recipients were on hand to accept their awards on Sunday, June 7 at the Annual Scholarship Reception held on the campus of Iowa State University. Scholarship applications were evaluated based on the applicant’s 4-H participation, academic accomplishments, financial need as well as other criteria established by the Iowa 4-H Foundation and the scholarship donors. A record number of 472 applications were submitted from 93 of Iowa’s 99 counties. Scholarship recipients represented 35 counties from across the state of Iowa with a wide variety of  4-H experiences.

2015 Iowa 4-H Foundation Gala Raises More Than $106,000

AMES, Iowa – 4-H supporters from around the state gathered on Feb. 28 in Cedar Rapids to raise funds to support the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Over 200 attendees enjoyed an evening full of food, socializing, and of course, opportunities to bid on more than 110 silent and live auction items! At the end of the night, over $106,000 was raised to fund opportunities for Iowa’s 4-H youth which include state-level award recognition, scholarships, national 4-H trips as well as financial aid support.

Iowa 4-H Foundation to host 6th Annual 4-H Gala in Cedar Rapids

The silent auction will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the Live Auction starting at 8:15 p.m. In addition to live and silent auctions, the purse and dessert auctions are back by popular demand! Auction highlights include:

  • Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament tickets
  • Choice of two tickets to any Big 10 men’s basketball game at the University of Iowa
  • Private Tour of San Francisco by a former 4-H State Officer and resident of California

Saveraid Joins Iowa 4-H Foundation as Development Director

AMES, Iowa – Emily Saveraid was named as Development Director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation effective Jan. 14, 2015. Emily graduated from Wartburg College and earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations and political science and is currently pursuing her masters in Philanthropy and Non Profit Development from the University of Northern Iowa.

Sac County’s Barb Determan named as 2014’s top Iowa 4-H Club Leader

AMES, Iowa – Throwing a surprise together is never easy, but on Wednesday, June 25 the Iowa 4-H Foundation and Successful Farming did just that at the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference Banquet being held in Iowa State University’s Hilton Coliseum. With over 700 Iowa 4-H’ers, chaperones, Extension and Outreach professionals, Iowa State faculty, and Iowa 4-H Foundation trustees in attendance Michael Tupper, an Iowa 4-H Foundation Youth Trustee, announced his independent selection committee had selected Barb Determan as the 2014 Successful Farming/Loren Kruse Outstanding Iowa 4-H Leader. Determan is 4-H Club Leader of the Early Achievers 4-H Club in Early, Iowa.

“I was completely surprised and I am very humble to receive such a high honor,” said Determan an Iowa 4-H leader who is officially in her 33 year as a volunteer Iowa 4-H leader. “I am very excited to help grow the legacy of Successful Farming’s support to Iowa’s 4-H youth. Loren Kruse’s story always inspired me, much like my mother who was my 4-H leader so many years ago.”

4-H members raise over $25,000 for Iowa 4-H; Wright County smashes record

AMES, Iowa – At the direction of the 2013-2014 4-H State Council, 354 4-H clubs representing 81 counties participated in the Iowa 4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign - the longest-running and the largest fundraising campaign conducted by 4-H members for 4-H members. This year’s campaign raised $25,642.70 to support Iowa 4-H youth programs and activities. $1,013.14 of this year’s campaign funds will help complete the tornado safe room at the Iowa 4-H Center. The remaining funds from the campaign will fund state events such as the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference, operation costs of the 2014-2015 State Council, and fund financial assistance to help 4-H families with state program fees and 4-H camp fees at the Iowa 4-H Center.

Iowa 4-H Foundation announces scholarships for 2014

 AMES, Iowa— The Iowa 4-H Foundation announces its scholarship program for 4 H’ers attending or planning to attend college fall of 2014. Students can apply for more than 69 scholarship opportunities totaling $63,200.

 The various awards range in amounts from $500 to $3,500. Some of the scholarships are open to students pursuing any field of study, while others are open to students pursuing degrees in agriculture, food and nutrition, agriculture business, animal science, or journalism. Former Iowa 4-H'ers and current 4-H'ers graduating from high school are eligible applicants for these scholarship awards.

Mitch Baum to serve as President of Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees

AMES, Iowa- Mitch Baum was elected as the President of the Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees at their annual meeting on October 11, 2013 held at the Meredith Corporation headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa.

Baum is the Business Development Manager of Summit Farms, LLC. He was a 9-year member of the Geneseo Jr. Leaders 4-H club in Henry County, Illinois. His favorite memories of 4-H include exhibiting livestock and presenting projects to the club membership. Mitch feels that the 4-H experience is one that continues for a lifetime; as a young person it encourages skill development that can never be taken away, as a professional it encourages youth education and community service. He enjoys serving as a trustee to an organization that has provided so much to him.

Current 4-H'er Michael Tupper to serve as Iowa 4-H Foundation Youth Trustee

AMES, Iowa- Michael Tupper was welcomed to the Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees at their annual meeting on October 11, 2013 held at the Meredith Corporation headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
Michael Tupper is currently a senior at New Hampton Community Schools where he is senior class president. He is currently the Northeast District FFA Vice President. He is involved in speech, choir, band, sports, and National Honor Society. He lives on a diversified family farm and enjoys advocating for agriculture. Michael is a member of the 4-H State Council, State Conference attendee, President of the Chickasaw County 4-H Council and member of the Ionia Rustlers 4-H Club. Michael enjoys interacting with adults and hopes to bring a youth perspective to the foundation. Michael plans to attend Iowa State University in 2014 to study Agriculture Engineering and pursue a career in agriculture.

 

Doug Den Adel to serve on Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees

AMES, Iowa- Doug Den Adel was welcomed to the Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees at their annual meeting on October 11, 2013 held at the Meredith Corporation headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
Doug Den Adel is the Executive Vice President at Jacobson Companies in Des Moines, Iowa. He was a member of the Just Us 4-H Club in Marion County where his project areas included dairy cows and swine. Doug and his wife, Heather, currently reside in Madrid, Iowa with their two children who are both members for the Madrid Merry Makers 4-H Club in Boone County. Doug looks forward to joining the Board of Trustees to help support the foundation.

 

Amy Enwright to serve on Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees

AMES, Iowa- Amy Enwright was welcomed to the Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees at their annual meeting on October 11, 2013 held at the Meredith Corporation headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
Amy Enwright is an entrepreneur and owner of Des Moines-based businesses and commercial real estate holdings. Amy and her husband are owners of Goldfinch Development, LLC, a commercial LED lighting business which promotes energy efficiency and sustainability. Originally from the Show-Me State, Amy was educated as a Registered Nurse and received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She has held numerous positions in the medical field, and served as Director of Nurses for home health care agencies in Missouri and Iowa. In January 2011, Amy was appointed Honorary Colonel by Governor Terry Branstad. Amy and her husband, Kirk, co-chair the Simon Estes Foundation 2013/2014 International Project to Eliminate Malaria. Amy and Kirk live in Windsor Heights.

 

Kirk Enwright to serve on Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees

AMES, Iowa- Kirk Enwright was welcomed to the Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees at their annual meeting on October 11, 2013 held at the Meredith Corporation headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
Kirk Enwright is an entrepreneur and owner of Des Moines-based businesses and commercial real estate holdings. Kirk and his wife, Amy, are owners of Goldfinch Development, LLC, a commercial LED lighting business which promotes energy efficiency and sustainability. They are also about to launch a new venture: NACTA (North American Classic Tractor Association) which will promote and grow the hobby of collecting classic tractors and its extensions. In January 2011, Kirk was appointed Honorary Colonel by Governor Terry Branstad. Kirk and Amy co-chair the Simon Estes Foundation 2013/2014 International Project to Eliminate Malaria. Kirk and Amy currently reside in Windsor Heights. 
 

 

Holly Grandin to serve on Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees

AMES, Iowa- Holly Grandin was welcomed to the Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees at their annual meeting on October 11, 2013 held at the Meredith Corporation headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
Holly Grandin of State Center, Iowa is an Ag Finance Specialist at New Century FS in Grinnell. Holly has a degree in Animal Science from Iowa State University. She was a member of the Orange Buds/Orange Blossoms 4-H Club in Black Hawk County, Club Leader in Cass County, Illinois and parent leader in Knox County, Illinois. Holly’s two children were 4-H members in Illinois. Her favorite 4-H memory includes 4-H fairs at the Cattle Congress Grounds in Waterloo and 4-H Dances. “4-H is a constant in my life. It has been a part of my life since I was 10 years old and for our children since they were 8 years old. It has shaped our values, solidifies our friendships, and shown us the paths to our careers,” says Holly.

 

Andy Determan to serve on Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees

AMES, Iowa- Andy Determan was welcomed to the Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees at their annual meeting on October 11, 2013 held at the Meredith Corporation headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa.

Andy is currently the Business Manager at The Scoular Company in Overland Park, Kansas. He is an Iowa 4-H'er from Early, Iowa where he was a 10 year member of the Early Achievers 4-H Club and 2 year member of the Iowa State 4-H Council. Andy also attended National 4-H Conference and National 4-H Congress. As a new member to the board of trustees, he says, "The 4-H program was ver instrumental in developing communication and leadership skills for myself as a youth and it's important that we continue to make these opportunities available for today's youth." Andy has also served as an Iowa 4-H Foundation Youth Trustee from 2001-2003. Outside of work, Andy's interests include traveling with family and friends, and attending sporting events across the county

 

Eric Johnson to serve on Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees

AMES, Iowa- Eric Johnson was welcomed to the Iowa 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees at their annual meeting on October 11, 2013 held at the Meredith Corporation headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
Eric Johnson, CPCU, AU, is Vice President of Nationwide Agribusiness Sales and Marketing. Eric joined Nationwide Agribusiness in 2002 as a Commercial Underwriting Manager. He went on to become a Commercial Underwriting Director and moved to the Sales and Marketing department three years ago as a Sales Director. Prior to joining the Nationwide family, Eric spent several years in underwriting with GuideOne Insurance Company and also spent four years with EMC Insurance Company as a Special Risk Underwriter and Commercial Underwriting Supervisor. Eric earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa.

 

Foundation Celebrates National 4-H Week

Monday: Head

·         The foundation will be displaying a 4-H History Table for guests of the 4-H Youth and Extension building on Iowa State University’s campus.

·         Trivia questions and facts on the foundation’s Facebook and Twitter.                

 

Tuesday: Heart

·         A “What 4-H Means to Me” board to see how 4-H has impacted the staff at the state office.   

·         The Iowa 4-H Foundation will be releasing recently added county histories on their website.

 

Wednesday: Health

·         The foundation staff will be joining the Healthiest State Initiative’s Healthiest State Walk at Iowa State University at noon participating in the North Loop. 

·         Staff will be bringing healthy GREEN Snacks such as green apples, broccoli, and sugar snap peas.

 

Thursday: Hands

The foundation will be donating items to the Rosedale Shelter in Ames, which is sponsored by the Youth and Shelter Services, Inc.                                                                                                                                                  

 

Friday: 4-H Green Day

Volunteers and Staff will be showing off 4-H pride by wearing green to work!

Exposure You Can't Buy

Patience, the ability to not give up on a difficult task, and to keep trying at something you want to accomplish are three keys to the Iowa 4-H Camera Corps program, sponsored annually by Nationwide Agribusiness. Since inception in 2004, this program has substantially grown with more than 100 youth applying to participate this year. Youth from across the Midwest have been involved in the program, including participants from Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Wyoming, and Arkansas.
