AMES, Iowa— Returning to an in-person event, the Iowa 4-H Foundation announces the honorees to be recognized at the Iowa 4-H Legacy Awards Gala. The Legacy Awards celebrates Iowa 4-H and recognizes those who have made an important impact on the program. Slated for 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 25 at the Convention Center in Des Moines, this signature fundraising event will showcase Iowa 4-H and raise funds to support the Program.

The evening will feature interactive 4-H exhibits, dinner and awards ceremony. Throughout the course of the evening, four supporters of the 4-H Program will be honored:

  • Corporate Partner: Iowa State Fair, Des Moines: Since it began in 1854, the Iowa State Fair has been a showcase for agricultural exhibition and a premier destination for 4-H’ers to showcase their exhibits and highlight their learning. The 2020 renovation of the 4-H Exhibits Building provides new opportunities to showcase 4-H’ers and improves the functionality of the building for year-round use.
  • Individual Supporter: The Tobin Family: Kelly & Irene Tobin raised four sons in 4-H in Taylor County. Today, the entire Tobin Family, including sons Jim, Terry, Kevin and Bernie continue to give back to the Iowa 4-H Program. In honor of their parents, a renewable scholarship was established to help two deserving young people pursue higher education each year.
  • Outstanding Alum: The Hon. Terry Branstad, Johnston: Terry E. Branstad is the former U.S. Ambassador to China and the longest serving governor in American history. A native of Leland, he was a 4-H member Winnebago County where he credits the leadership development part of the program that set a path to prolific career of public service.
  • Contributing Youth: Logan Pickhinke, Early: Logan, a Sac County 4-H’er, knows that making a difference in his community is essential, so he identifies projects and works with others to make it happen. He has been an active 10-year member of the Early Achievers 4-H Club. His community service, leadership and communications activities have earned him recognition and have help him to make a difference!

“We’re thrilled to be back in person for this year’s Legacy Awards Gala to share the impact of the Iowa 4-H Program through the stories of our honorees,” said Emily Saveraid, Iowa 4-H Foundation Executive Director.  “This year’s honorees represent long-time supporters, icons in the state of Iowa and the next generation of community leaders. Their stories will inspire you!”

Attendees will have an opportunity to make a contribution to support Iowa 4-H during the dessert auction. Dollars raised support the Iowa 4-H Foundation’s mission to fund 4-H youth programs delivered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and to provide other opportunities-- state recognition, national 4-H trips, college scholarships and special programs, which enhance the Iowa 4-H experience.
