Iowa 4-H Foundation Recognizes 4-H’ers across the State

Over $70,000 in 2016 Iowa 4-H scholarships were awarded to 4-H members

Ames, Iowa –The Iowa 4-H Foundation has announced the recipients of over 70 Iowa 4-H college scholarships valued at over $70,000. Recipients accepted their awards on Sunday, June 5 at the Foundation’s Scholarship Reception held in the Scheman Building at Iowa State University. Over 500 applications were submitted. Award recipients hail from 33 counties across the state of Iowa with a wide variety of 4-H experiences.

Scholarship applications were evaluated based on the applicant’s 4-H participation, academic accomplishments, goals and future plans, financial need as well as other criteria established by the Iowa 4-H Foundation and the scholarship donors.

“Every year, we are in awe of the ways these young people make their communities a better place,” said Albert Grunenwald, Iowa 4-H Foundation Executive Director. “We are thankful to have donors who want to acknowledge the students’ hard work and invest in 4-H’ers who will continue to change the world regardless of where they go to school or what they study.”

This year, the Northwest Iowa 4-H Scholarship was added to honor two incoming freshman from Northwest Iowa counties, who planned to attend University of Northern Iowa, University of Iowa, Iowa State University or any post-secondary school in those counties. These $1,000 scholarships are funded through proceeds from Iowa 4-H Foundation’s Northwest Iowa Golf Tournament.

In addition to the traditional scholarship program, the Iowa 4-H Foundation partners with Hills Bank and Trust Company to provide a unique opportunity; the Hills Bank Leadership Program Grant Awards. Each year, Hills Bank & Trust contributes $20,000 to the Iowa 4-H Foundation to award a $1,000 scholarship to 20 high school juniors. These students are selected to participate in the program, complete a year of leadership training and receive the scholarship upon graduation. More information about the Hills Bank and Trust Leadership Grant Program can be found here.
