Outstanding 4-H Leader Award Nomination Now Available

4-H volunteers recognized for helping youth succeed

AMES, Iowa – Nomination forms for the third annual Loren Kruse/Successful Farming Outstanding 4-H Leader Award are now available through the Iowa 4-H Foundation. This prestigious award honors one 4-H volunteer leader annually.

“This is an award where Iowa 4-H members have a voice and choice,” said Albert Grunenwald, Executive Director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. “They get to raise their hand and nominate an adult who has taken the time to make a positive difference in their life.”

Nominees must be nominated by a current or former Iowa 4-H member and must be submitted online to the Iowa 4-H Foundation by February 1, 2015. The nominations will be reviewed by an independent committee, led by a youth trustee of the Iowa 4-H Foundation board. The individual recipient will be selected by criteria standards and notified no later than June 1, 2015.

The nominee may be a current or former Iowa 4-H club leader who has inspired a 4-H’er to reach potentials beyond those they thought they could achieve on their own merits.

“We’re looking for individuals who exemplify the type of leader that helps young people be the best they can be,” said Grunenwald. “People like Loren Kruse’s club leader who helped him overcome his fear of public speaking.”

The recipient of the 2015 Loren Kruse/Successful Farming Outstanding 4-H Leader Award will be recognized at the State 4-H Youth Conference Banquet on Wednesday, July 1, 2015. The recipient will be awarded with a certificate and $1,000 to utilize in one of the following five ways:

  1. Travel, registration and hotel costs to attend a Volunteer 4-H Leader’s forum for continued inspiration.
  2. Donation back to their club for a specific and defined project.
  3. Donation to their county 4-H endowment to support local 4-H youth opportunities.
  4. Scholarship to a 4-H member in their county (for that year).
  5. Donation to the Iowa 4-H Foundation in the name of the honored leader.

In October of 2012, the Meredith Foundation honored their departing editor-in-chief, Loren Kruse, by establishing the Successful Farming/Loren Kruse Outstanding 4-H Leader Award with the Iowa 4-H Foundation. This award is the highest recognition a 4-H leader can receive in the state of Iowa.

Previous recipients included: 2013 Claudia Putnam, Muscatine county and 2014 Barb Determan, Sac county.

Additional information, including the nomination form, can be found on the foundation’s website at www.iowa4hfoundation.org.
