FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE IOWA 4-H FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NEW SCHOLARSHIP FOR 2014

AMES, Iowa—The Iowa 4-H Foundation announces the Trans Ova Genetics Scholarship for 2014. This scholarship will provide a $1500 scholarship for undergraduates attending any public or private college or university fall 2014. Other qualifications for the scholarship include: GPA 3.0 or higher, demonstration of leadership in extracurricular activities, and future career aspirations to enter the livestock reproduction or genetic biotechnology fields.

Founded in 1980, Trans Ova Genetics offers advanced reproductive technologies to help breeders multiply the success of their elite cattle. These technologies include embryo transfer, in vitro fertilization, sex-sorted semen, as well as genetic preservation, and cloning services through ViaGen. Trans Ova Genetics also offers several recipient options, including health-certified recipients, Multiplier Herd Programs and a Live Calf Program. Headquartered in Sioux Center, Iowa, Trans Ova Genetics has regional centers in Missouri, Maryland and Texas, as well as multiple satellite stations throughout the United States.

Dr. David Faber, president of Trans Ova Genetics, considers youth scholarships to be a direct investment in the individual and in the future of agriculture. “By 2045, the Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that we will need to double animal protein production. Additionally, we need to accomplish this in an environmentally sustainable manner. More than 70 percent of this increase needs to come from technology. We do not have the luxury to double animal numbers or acres utilized. We must encourage our talented youth to consider animal biotechnology as an opportunity in which they can make a significant contribution.”

More than 70 scholarship programs totaling over $65,000 may be awarded through Iowa 4-H Foundation.  The various awards range in amounts from $500 to $3,500.  Some of the scholarships are open to students pursuing any field of study, while others are open to students pursuing degrees in agriculture, food and nutrition, ag business, animal science, and journalism.  Former Iowa 4-H'ers and current 4-H'ers graduating from high school are eligible applicants.

4-H Scholarship information and online applications are available on the Iowa 4-H Foundation web page www.iowa4hfoundation.org/scholarships

Applications must be submitted online no later than 11:59 PM, February 1, 2014 for consideration.

Since 1949, the Iowa 4-H Foundation has provided financial resources to develop and deliver quality 4-H programs and recognition opportunities for Iowa youth.  “I appreciate and applaud Dr. Faber and his talented staff at Trans Ova Genetics who have prioritized their contributions to 4-H by providing this scholarship.  Selected 4-H’ers are grateful for the scholarship opportunity and acknowledgement they receive for their dedication to the 4-H learning experience,” says Kris Fish Kuhlmann, Executive Director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation.  “In addition, it’s critical for Iowa youth to see career opportunities they might not otherwise be exposed to or even know were possible.  The ‘corporate responsibility’ Trans Ova Genetics is stepping forward with helps elevate youth awareness.”
