2013 Monona County - Sharyl Bruning

Sharyl Bruning began her service as a 4-H leader with the Castana Cloverines in Monona County in 1984. She later became leader of the Mapleton Starspinners 4-H Club and was recognized as the Monona County 4-H Leader of the Year in 2004. Sharyl was a 4-H member of the Garfield Cloverettes 4-H Club from 4th grade through high school. She showed cattle and textiles.

After high school, she attended Briar Cliff College for 2 years and transferred to Iowa State University for 2 more years earning her degree in Family and Consumer Science Education and Music.

Sharyl has been a member of the Monona County Referendum committee, 4-H Extension Council and the 4-H Monona County Endowment Board. She is a fair superintendent in the 4-H Building and judges at many surrounding fairs. Sharyl taught music at Danbury Catholic Grade School since 1996 and resigned in 2012 to help with the farming operation.

She is a member of a group called “Nuns on the Run”, a volunteer group of ladies that performs, with any donations received going back to the community and area needs. She is very active in her church as cantor and teaches religious education. She is a member of St. Mary’s Guild having held many offices.

Sharyl’s husband, Dave, is a long-time Monona County farmer and has just taken the position of Monona County 4-H Beef superintendent. They have 3 grown children who were active in 4-H being involved in county and state fair exhibits.

Sharyl has been in charge of the Monona County Queen Contest at the County Fair for the past five years. Sharyl enjoys traveling, listening to music and going to concerts, sewing, cooking and baking. She is especially interested in helping with home improvement and personal development 4-H projects. She enjoys helping kids learn and turning on that “light bulb”. She is a person that has a hard time saying no. Monona County Extension Staff and 4-H families are proud to add Sharyl to the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame.
