2013 Delaware County - Larry and Nancy Shover

Larry and Nancy Shover feel that they have been blessed by the many fine people they have known and worked with in 4-H.
Larry grew up in a 4-H family. His parents were the township booster couple and his father his 4-H club and dairy project leader. Larry’s siblings, as well as cousins and friends shared many fun and educational 4-H memoriestogether. Fair, 4-H camp and the 4-H basketball tournament were yearly highlights. Special memories included the first Delaware County 4-H Council, demonstrations and the National 4-H Dairy Conference.

Nancy was a Cleveland, Ohio native who met Larry at Iowa State University where she received her Master’s Degree in Statistics. Larry received a B.S. in Dairy Science/Honors Program. They were married in September 1970 and began farming with Larry’s parents.

Larry judged a number of 4-H dairy shows, and together the couple coached Delaware County 4-H Dairy Judging teams for 12 years. Three state-winning Dairy Judging teams, a state- winning Quiz Bowl Team and the number of outstanding young people who participated made this especially memorable for them.

Larry was a 4-H dairy project leader, and Larry and Nancy founded and led the Tri-Town Hoyas 4-H Club. Over the years they helped select 4-H record book and project winners at the county and district level. Nancy enjoys working every year during the 4-H SMA exhibit judging at the Delaware County Fair.

TheShover’s  have sponsored trophies for 4-H Dairy Judging and 4-H Quiz Bowl team members, contributed to Delaware County Fair swine barn, dairy barn and judging arena projects as well as contributing to the 4-H for 1000 Fund in honor of Larry’s parents, Jim and Frances Shover.

Larry and Nancy each served 4 years on the Delaware County 4-HYouth Committee.   Larry served 4 years on the Delaware County Extension Council and 3 years on the Iowa State Extension Advisory Committee. Larry has received the 4-H Alumni Award, and together they have received the Meritorious Service to 4-H Award in Delaware County.

The Shover’s farm together in Delaware County south of Delhi. The farm includes registered Holsteins, an independent farrow-to-finish swine enterprise and diversified crops. An Iowa Distinguished Dairyman, Larry has been honored with a number of state and national honors and awards in the dairy industry. Together the couple  received the Delaware County Conservation Farm Award and the Delaware County Dairy Service Award. They are active members of Golden Congregational Church, rural Ryan, where Nancy serves as pianist.

The Shover family (Charlene, Jim, Larry and Shirley) have established a Delaware
County 4-H Scholarship in memory of their parents, James and Frances Shover.
