2012 Taylor County- Gwen Maynes

Gwen Maynes has been a tremendous example as to what the four “H”s in 4-H represent.

Head – She is always thinking of what she could do to help others.  She has used her knowledge in various areas, such as cooking, sewing, and livestock to teach and help her five children and 14 grandchildren learn about these project areas.

Heart – She has a heart of gold.  She has been the “Ribbon Lady” in the Red Barn on the Taylor County Fair Exhibit Day for many years.  Not only did she hand the 4-H’er their ribbons, but she also asked them about their exhibits and showed genuine interest in what they were doing.

Hands – By looking at Gwen’s hands, one can see she worked hard over the years not only on the family farm, but she also volunteered for many 4-H, community, and church events.  Many times she prepared meals for the annual livestock carcass evaluation.  Not only would she stand and serve the meat, but enjoyed visiting with all of the 4-H’ers and their families in the serving line.

Health – Gwen keeps herself young by following all of her grandkids in their many activities.  At the present time, her grandchildren  live and participate in 4-H in three different counties.  She does not miss a livestock show or fair sale that they are participating in – whether at the county fair or the Iowa State Fair.  She can also be seen sitting on the bleachers or in her lawn chair at their many school activities.
