2011 Greene County - Donel & Maxine Ebersole

2011 Greene CountyIt was 39 years ago that Donel and Maxine Ebersole started working with young people in the 4-H program.  They inspired another couple with the same love of horses to join them as project leaders.

Maxine was a 6-year leader of the Hardin Girls 4-H club, and served on the Greene County 4-H Committee, as well as a 4-H food stand volunteer for five years.  As a 4-H volunteer, Maxine served as a citizenship leader and chaperoned a group of young people on the 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus trip to Washington, D.C.  Due to her involvement in Greene County 4-H, Maxine was recognized as an Honorary Greene County 4-H Member.

Donel and Maxine were Greene County’s 4-H horse and pony leaders for a decade, spending half of that time on the State Fair Horse Department advisory board.

When Don decided he wanted to start an invitational 4-H horse show in Greene County, he took the initiative to the State 4-H Office.  Given the OK, Don laid the groundwork for the first 4-H invitational horse show in Iowa, an event that continued to be held for many years in Greene County.

Maxine and Don inspired many youth to become involved in the 4-H horse project by providing several opportunities to participate in shows and take trail rides.  Over the years, they instructed dozens of young people on the proper care of their horses, giving them a strong working knowledge of owning a horse, and to further encourage the youth they sponsored a traveling trophy from 1970 until 1994 for Showmanship.

For their dedication and service to the Iowa 4-H program, as well as solid commitment to Greene County 4-H, Maxine and Donel are prime examples of Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductees.
