2011 East Pottawattamie County - Dr. Jim Hoffman

2011 East Pottawattamie CountyJim Hoffmann was introduced to 4-H along with his brothers and sisters as a member of the Layton Livewires 4-H Club in Walnut. Jim’s parents believed in the 4-H program and encouraged their children to participate in the many 4-H activities that were offered to members in East Pottawattamie County during the 1960’s and early 70’s. Jim’s interest was in his livestock projects, especially market beef. This love of livestock led him to Iowa State University where he studied Animal Science and applied and was accepted into the ISU Veterinary School. Following graduation he spent some time as a Federal meat inspector and then became a partner in an Avoca veterinary practice. Through the years Dr. Hoffmann served many livestock producers in Pottawattamie County and the surrounding area and has done his share in caring for many small animals for his clients.

Jim and Maureen’s children were all 4-H members and it was during this time that Jim began volunteering as a club leader. Jim wanted to make sure that every member in the club got involved in the activities and his constant encouragement inspired many members of his club to do just that. As a result the members got more involved in 4-H and many received recognition at the county level and beyond for their outstanding achievements in projects and other activities. Jim was a “Dad” for every member of the club and worked closely with the parents of these members to keep them involved in the program as well. He has been a 4-H volunteer for over 20 years and has been a club leader for 18 years.

Though his children are all grown and on their own Jim continues to volunteer his extra time to the 4-H program in the county as well as to youth and other events in his home town. He is the county fair veterinarian for the Pottawattamie County Fair and is always around the fairgrounds during the fair to help out where ever help is needed. He currently serves as a member of the East Pottawattamie County Extension Council and he provides good insight and perspective for Extension programming in the county. He was instrumental in helping the county pass the Extension Referendum during his tenure on the council. Several years ago he was selected as an Honorary 4-H Member by the East Pottawattamie County 4-H Youth Committee. He has also been recognized for his professional expertise by the Iowa Veterinary Medicine Association.

Dr. Jim Hoffmann truly exemplifies the kind of volunteer that moves a 4-H program in a positive direction by his commitment of time and leadership. East Pottawattamie County is proud to honor him as this year’s Hall of Fame recipient.
