2021 Mahaska County David Willemsen

David Willemsen has been active with Mahaska County 4-H since 1986 when he started as a project leader.

In 1990, he became an Advanced Feeder Pen Superintendent and has enjoyed working with the 4-H youth and their exhibits each year.  He assists with the local beef weigh-ins and at the county fair and has played an integral part in developing a very successful project area with both beef and sheep.  Additionally, due to the strength of the Advanced Feeder Pen project area, the Carcass beef contest has grown significantly over the past three years.

David works with other Advanced Feeder Pen Superintendents to calculate data and evaluate the exhibits at the fair.  His entire first day of the fair is dedicated to the feeder pen contest as he and other superintendents interview members and hold conference discussions about the project area, beef production, and quality feeding programs.  The Advanced Feeder Pen project is a fantastic way to help local youth learn about the beef industry from start to finish and is a favorite of those who aren't fans of breaking their animals to lead and walking into a show ring.

David is simply a joy to work with and has been a fantastic 4-H volunteer in Mahaska County.
