Marlys Von Stein has been a 4-H’er, 4-H parent, a 4-H club leader/volunteer, and, an employee of Iowa 4-H. She started her 4-H career as a 4-H’er in Buena Vista County where she was a member of the Fairfield Farmerettes 4-H Club. She attended Girls’ State 4-H Conference in the 1960’s. Marlys started as a volunteer for Polk County 4-H by being the founding leader of We XL 4-H Club that her three boys would be members of. This club is still active in Polk County today.

In 1996, Marlys was hired as the Polk County 4-H county youth coordinator and she served in the position until her retirement in 2003. She was known in the community for assisting families and volunteers to have the best 4-H experience possible.

Marlys continues to volunteer in several capacities both for Polk County 4-H and Iowa 4-H. During the Polk County Fair, she serves as a superintendent during building exhibit judging. Marlys also serves as the coordinator for static exhibit check-in at the Iowa State Fair. Her ability to organize volunteers and understanding of Iowa 4-H makes her successful in this position. She is also now a grandparent of Polk County 4-H’ers.  Marlys is, and has been for years, a very valuable volunteer to Polk County and deserving of this special award.
