2005 Story County - Glen Mackey

2005 Story County - Glen MackeyGlen Mackey is a long-term 4-H volunteer and pioneer who has worked at the local club and county levels in several counties during his entire adult life.  He has been active in 4-H as a member and volunteer for over 50 years.  Even at age 81, Glen continues to participate as a 4-H volunteer.

Glen first became involved in 4-H at the age of 14 as an active member of the Loyal Lafayette Lads club, now the Lafayette Leaders, in Story County.  He participated with sheep, swine, and poultry projects from  age 14 through 21.  He showed the Grand Champion market lamb at the Story County Fair and participated as a member of the acclaimed Story County livestock judging team at the State Fair.

Glen served as a club leader of the Loyal Lafayette Lads club in Story County for six years.  He emphasized livestock judging and communications projects.

Glen lived and worked in several counties.  Each time Glen and his family moved, Glen became actively involved in the local and county 4-H organizations.   Glen is one of the earliest members of the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

•    1960-1966  Lucas County – Club leader or the Lincoln Leader club with emphasis on communications and livestock projects
•    1966-1978 Boone County – County project leader for gardening, forestry, and entomology
•    1970-1978 Boone County - Science and mechanics superintendent

Glen has been recognized by the Isaac Walton League, the Iowa Wildlife Federation, and Ducks Unlimited for his conservation and land stewardship efforts.  His enthusiasm and leadership resulted in several of his neighbors following Glen’s example and becoming active conservationists and adopting similar good land stewardship practices.

Glen’s enthusiasm for youth programs and 4-H, his genuine concern for the environment, and generosity for local civic projects can serve as a role model for all of us.
