2018 Mahaska County: Leon De Groot

Leon De Groot served as a Mahaska County 4-H Beef superintendent for seven years.  In that time, he assisted many youth with their beef projects and shared his knowledge with them.  He assisted 4-H staff with weigh-ins and the county fair beef show.

He enjoyed being at the Southern Iowa Fair and joking around with the 4-H staff and members.  His smile could help ease the nerves of the young people participating in the beef show.  He was quick to assure    4-H and FFA members they were doing a good job and to remember to have fun.

When he wasn’t volunteering, Leon farmed north of Oskaloosa and took great pride in his work.  He loved agriculture and farming.

Leon was also very active within his faith community and participated in mission trips over the years.  Leon was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church where he was a deacon, youth elder, Sunday school teacher, and young people’s leader.

Leon and his wife, Lana, have four children who were active in 4-H.  Now, several of their grandchildren are becoming active with the 4-H Clover Kids program in Mahaska County.  Leon would be proud to know that the 4-H tradition is continuing with another generation of his family.
