2018 Dubuque County: Dave & LuAnn Krapfl

Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame Inductees

2018 Dubuque County: Dave & LuAnn Krapfl

Dave and LuAnn Krapfl are honored to be recipients of the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame recognition. They have long been supporters of 4-H and appreciate the life-skills taught by this organization.

Dave and LuAnn were relative late-comers to 4-H, with both of their first experiences coming as adults, as leaders of the New Vienna Future Leaders.  While they may not have been involved with 4-H as children, that did not hinder their love for developing youth and their passion for 4-H.

Dave became a leader of the New Vienna Future Leaders in 1982, a role he served for 25 years!  Dave loved to help organize 4-H sports tournaments in the county.  He would teach his teams that winning isn’t everything and even if his teams weren’t winning tournaments, they were always the ones to beat when it came to sportsmanship awards.  Though he did help organize many tournaments, what Dave is best known for is his ability to instill a sense of belonging in the kids he served and his drive to make sure everyone was included and felt valued.

LuAnn followed Dave into club leadership, taking a role as a leader with the New Vienna Future Leaders in 1984 and serving the club for over 15 years.  After stepping down as a leader in 2000, LuAnn served the county in a number of roles, including: CYC, assistant to the CYC, and office assistant.  LuAnn retired in 2011, but that didn’t stop her from serving her county and advocating for 4-H.  She was elected to the Extension Council in 2012 and is still a council member.  LuAnn did many things for the county while serving as a volunteer, including organizing a food stand for the tractor pull and coordinating many lock-ins.

Dave and LuAnn cherish the life-long connections they have made through 4-H and the organization has become like a new home for their family.  All eight of their children and many of their grandchildren have been involved in 4-H.

Dave and LuAnn commented that it was a privilege to watch 4-Hers grow into upstanding adults and community leaders, and eventually working with those members’ children and seeing them grow as well!  Despite all of that, they both say they learned more from the kids over those 25 plus years than the kids could have possibly learned from them.
