2018 Taylor County: Clyde and Helen Belding

Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame Inductees

2018 Taylor County: Clyde and Helen Belding

Clyde and Helen Belding from Taylor County are truly worthy of induction into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame.  One word to describe them is dedicated- to each other, to family, and grandchildren.  Dedication mirrors their work ethic, values, and strong commitment to farming and raising livestock for over 60 years. Clyde and his wife, Helen, have four children; Rodney, Denise, Jan, and Jolene.

Clyde, along with life time friend Jim Beck, began as leaders for the Blue Grove Mustangs in 1965 and continued until his last daughter, Jolene, graduated in 1978. His girls belonged to the "boys" club because they wanted to show livestock.

Many hay rides, bon fires, basketball tournaments, club tours, and roller skating parties were part of the clubs activities.

Clyde should be known as the "cow whisperer".  His love of livestock led him into being involved with 4-H.  Members of his club participated in one of the state livestock judging teams at the Iowa State Fair and placed in the top 5.

Clyde and Helen saw so many opportunities for young people to become involved in a program that would teach them responsibility, respect, good work ethic, along with having fun while participating.  Many of the club members taking livestock to the Iowa State Fair, had to secure someone with a pick up or truck to haul the cattle to the fair.  It was a "big deal" back then to get all the logistics coordinated.  Rodney, one of his sons, first livestock project was a calf that kept getting out, so Clyde tied the calf up and it became easy to lead, so his 4-H’er son was inspired to continue showing livestock.  Clyde and Helen’s four children showed cattle, lambs, and pigs.

Clyde was also very involved in his community near Lenox.  He served on the Lenox School Board for many years, Farm Credit Board, and was chosen as the Rural Citizen of the Year.  Clyde and Helen live on a century farm.  His livestock cowherd has reached well over 200 head.  He sure does mow and bale a lot of hay!  Clyde loves kids, especially his grandkids and great grandchildren who are now showing livestock projects at the Taylor County Fair.  He is very proud of all those he had the opportunity to influence in the 4-H program. His patience is virtuous and he has a grin and giggle to compliment.
