2018 Calhoun County: Dawn Clark

Dawn Clark from Lake City, Iowa was a 4-H leader for the Calhoun County Jackson Pioneers 4-H Club for 10 years. Dawn was very patient, organized, and thoughtful and wanted all members to learn and have fun while being part of the group. The club met each month in the Lake City Hospital basement where they would listen to and participate in life skills, presentations, and demonstrations.

Some of the activities Dawn helped plan for her members were group trips to Perfect Games in Ames, bowling, annual picnics, swimming, and helping coordinate the club’s annual fundraiser of Holiday Greenery. These events, along with many more, took a lot of planning time for Dawn but she was always willing to put in the extra work to make sure her club was provided an opportunity to have fun and have new experiences while being part of the Jackson Pioneers.

It was also very important for Dawn to provide several opportunities for her club to give back to their community. Some of the ways Dawn arranged for them to give back was delivering Meals on Wheels, packing snacks for farmers during harvest, volunteering at the local movie theater, collecting canned goods for the local food pantries, and helping with holiday events throughout the year.

Because of Dawn’s dedication, the Jackson Pioneers were awarded many awards at the county and the state level. The club had several youth apply for and receive scholarships through 4-H.

To help her members prepare for the fair, Dawn held different project workshops for her members. Dawn would also hold an annual achievement show before the fair to help members feel comfortable and prepared with their exhibits. Dawn was very positive and encouraging to all youth and encouraged all members to participate in bringing different exhibits to the fair. After the fair Dawn would help members with their record books. As she would go over them with her members she always left encouraging words to show her support for the youth’s efforts.

In additional to being an active 4-H leader, Dawn was also a member of the Calhoun County Extension Council for the last four years. While on council, Dawn was very active in advocating for the needs of 4-H members and volunteered with many different events during the fair and other extension events in the community. She also held the office of secretary and was active on different committees within the council.
