2017 Butler County: Susan Schrage

Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame Inductees

2017 Butler County: Susan Schrage

Butler County is pleased to recognize Susan Schrage of Allison as their 2017 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductee.  While Sue was not in 4-H herself, she has made a huge impact on Butler County 4-H!

Sue has been a leader of the Butler County Young Riders 4-H club for 13 years and served as the horse superintendent for many years.  She gained leadership of the Young Riders club when it had only 4 members.  Within 2 years, there were over 40 members.  The club is still strong today.

Sue has not simply been a club leader or superintendent, she has accomplished a lot for the horse program in Butler County.  Sue worked to remodel the horse barn on the fairgrounds so exhibitors could stall their horses there during the fair.  Fundraising, designing, and building an announcers stand near the horse arena is another one of Sue’s notable accomplishments.

The 4-H’ers always come first for Sue.  Whether it is a clinic, an open show, or creating a drill team, Sue is there for the 4-H’ers.

Selfless, caring, and willing to fight for what she believes in, Sue always puts other’s needs before her own.  Even stage 4 ovarian cancer could not stop Sue!  She ran a 4-H meeting just two days after her diagnosis.

Sue will tell you she doesn’t know much about horses, but she is constantly learning and finding people to teach her 4-H’ers!   She truly models the 4-H motto, “Making the Best Better” as she works with the 4-H’ers in the club.
