2002 Monroe County - Lucille Bettis

2002 Monroe County - Lucille BettisVolunteering has always been a way of life for Lucille Bettis.  “My dad always did whatever he could for other people,” she said.  Lucille has continued in his footsteps.  “It is so important to do everything that we can to help others,” she said.  Lucille is always compassionate, enthusiastic, and helpful, especially when it concerns youth.

Lucille was born in Monroe County and graduated from Albia High School.  She married Herbert Bettis in 1941.  They have 5 children, 16 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren.

Although never involved with 4-H as a youth, Lucille became interested with the 4-H program through her husband, Herbert, and his family.  Lucille had 28 years of service with the 4-H program and still sponsors an award for the Outstanding Clothing Record Book.  Lucille was a leader of the Hiteman 4-H Club along with her sister-in law Maxine Cosgrove.  Lucille was later a leader for the Troy good Homemakers 4-h Club.  Lucille also served on the State Extension Advisory Council.

Lucille is a longtime active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, was the church secretary and parish assistant for 22 years.  She taught Sunday School, played piano, and led youth groups.  Lucille helped organize the Monroe County Home Health Association that began sponsorship of Meals on Wheels and Leisure Lounge.  She was one of the founders of the Monroe County Hospital Auxillary and helped organize the first rural PTA at Spencer School in Troy Township.  In 1966, Lucille was named Master Homemaker by Wallace Farmer magazine.

Presently, Lucille leads a support group for widows, she visits numerous shut-ins and is a frequent in both nursing homes in Albia, leading weekly Bible study groups or playing the piano.

Lucille loves volunteering and says that “you can’t help someone else without helping yourself”.
