2002 Floyd County - Thelma G. Johnson

2002 Floyd County - Thelma G. JohnsonWhen Thelma Johnson joined her local 4-H Club, the Careful Canners, 78 years ago, she learned the value of the 4-H experience.  Mabel Stoeber, Thelma’s
mother served as the club leader.

During the ensuing 8 decades, Thelma served as a leader of the Ulster future Homemakers 4-H club and created the Floyd County Senior 4-H Citizenship Club.  She led the Floyd County Girls 4-H Committee, raised her four children to be 9 year 4-H members, and participated in Floyd County Fair activities.  Thelma was on the committee responsible for raising the funds to purchase the present Floyd County Fair Grounds.  Thelma has served Floyd County 4-H for over 25 years.

Thelma and her family hosted 4-H International Farm Youth Exchange delegates and numerous people from around the world in her home and farm.  The benefits of 4-H were so well developed in her family that eight of her grandchildren experienced 4-H while growing up in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana.

Thelma has served her community and state in many capacities.  Of note is her role as chairperson of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation Women’s Committee for several years.  She has always led by example in service to other people and by positive encouragement to people working with her.  “To Make the Best Better” could be the theme behind her leadership and service to the Floyd County community.
