Jarilyn (Jerry) Upchurch has been an integral part of the Story County 4-H program for over 35 years. In 2005 she was recognized for 25 years of service as a 4-H club leader. She continues to serve as the Story County superintendent of the Flower Garden project.
As a 4-H leader, Jerry provided appealing activities that spurred young people’s interest in exploring many different project areas. Through her leadership, 4-H members gained knowledge and skills such as learning how to run a business meeting and serving the community through service projects. One of those projects included delivering fruit baskets to the elderly in the community each December, a tradition the club carries on today. Citizenship and leadership development was a strong component of her teaching.
Jerry motivated club members to serve beyond the club level. As a County Youth Committee member for 15 years, she encouraged 4-H’ers to participate in promoting the County 4-H program, which they did. Her involvement in the Story County 4-H History Committee for the past 12 years is another example of her commitment to 4-H.
It is apparent Jerry’s leadership and dedication to the 4-H program was not only instilled in her 4-H club members, but also in her children, grandchildren and now in her great grandchildren who participate in the Clover Kid program.
Working with youth has always been a priority for Jerry. Her interest in youth has reached out into her community where she served as a mentor for elementary school children and was a school Pen Pal. She is an active member of her community, church, Kiwanis and other groups.
Story County is extremely pleased to recognize Jerry Upchurch as the 2015 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame recipient.
