2015 Clarke County- Melanie Eddy

Melanie Eddy’s passion for 4-H began at a very young age. She grew up on a farm in rural Osceola and joined 4-H in the 5th grade. She was a member of the Ward Washington Wanderettes girl’s 4-H club, and showed interest in food and nutrition, clothing and home furnishings. She also had an interest in livestock so she joined a boy’s 4-H club, the Washington Trailblazers. Each year she showcased many exhibits at the county and state fair. She also showed cattle at the local level.  As a 4-Her Melanie enjoyed mentoring the younger 4-Hers and helping them find their interests.

She was an active member of the 4-H and Youth Committee. In 1985 4-H families, alumni, and friends willingly donated their recipes for a 220 page cookbook called “Clarke County Dining Delights Cookbook.” Melanie was instrumental contributor in making the cookbook possible. She spent many hours typing and proofreading. It would not have been possible without her.

All proceeds from the cookbook went to the 4-H program to help send 4-Hers to camp, conference, and provided insurance for all 4-H activities.

The love of 4-H ran deep in Melanie’s family as her grandmother, aunt and father were all leaders. Melanie joined the list of Clarke County 4-H volunteers in 1998 when her oldest daughter joined 4-H. She was a leader for the K.W. Hustlers 4-H club until she retired in 2011. To this day, Melanie will tell you her favorite part about being a leader was working with the youth.

Together, Melanie and Brian gave their three daughters; Jamie, Emily and Kimberly the ultimate 4-H experience! Their family enjoyed numerous hours sewing and cooking many exhibits for the fair. It became a family affair because Melanie’s mother and grandmother also shared their knowledge and experience. Brian helped the girls with their livestock projects which included swine, cattle, and sheep.

Melanie continues to volunteer her time with the Clarke County 4-H program in other capacities including membership on the 4-H Endowment Committee. You will also spot her each day at the Clarke County Fair with a helping hand and being a spectator at each event.

What began in her early 4-H years has fostered a lifelong passion of working with youth. Melanie currently works as an Education Coordinator at their church and is a registered childcare provider. Melanie enjoys coordinating and teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, cooking delicious homemade meals for her family, and simply spending time with the ones she loves including her three grandchildren.
