2014 Black Hawk County - Louis and Pat Beck

Service to youth and community has marked the lives of Louis and Pat Beck.  Both were active 4-H members:  Louis in Black Hawk County for 10 years as a member of the Bright Eagles Club and Pat in Scott County for 9 years as a member of the Lincoln Go-Getters.  Louis participated in livestock, science and communication project areas and served in leadership roles on county and area councils.  Pat participated in home improvement, communications and citizenship projects; served on county, area and state councils; and served as the girls' state 4-H president. Both are active as county fair judges and volunteers. Both received the Black Hawk County 4-H Alumni Award and have been active, long-time supporters of the Black Hawk County 4-H and FFA Fair Foundation which has grown to become Iowa's largest and most financially-stable fair foundation in the state.   Both are enthusiastic supporters of their alma mater, Iowa State University.

Louis' professional career as an agricultural science instructor/FFA Advisor, currently in La Porte City, has left an indelible mark on hundreds of students.  As a top-notch FFA Advisor, first-rate rankings are common among his students, including superior chapter ratings for 25 years and numerous state proficiency awards.  He has involved his students in hundreds of volunteer hours supporting community projects and introducing the students to this important aspect of citizenship.  Louis volunteers on the fair board and serves as a livestock superintendent at the county and state fairs. He is a dual enrollment class instructor for Hawkeye Community College and was his school's representative to the Global Agricultural Program to Brazil in 2013.

Pat's service to 4-H has included volunteer leadership of Bright Eagles 4-H Club and nine-year membership on the Iowa 4-H Foundation, including one year as its president. She also volunteers for state scholarship and award selection processes. Pat has enjoyed a career in communications positions for education, manufacturing, publishing and health care organizations.  Her volunteer involvement supports many local non-profits and community groups.

The Becks’ are convincing advocates for 4-H involvement. "We have seen the power of 4-H enhance our lives and the lives of our children," Pat said.  "Our children have lifelong friends, positive work habits and exciting careers that began with their 4-H experiences in Black Hawk County."

The Becks are solid and respected citizens of our county, earning many prestigious awards and commendations. They demonstrate the importance of service in all aspects of their life.  We salute and honor their service to Black Hawk County!
